Krassimir Kanev

Krassimir Kanev is Chair of the Bulgarian Helsinki Committee. He studied philosophy at the St. Kliment Okhridski University of Sofia and specialized in human rights at Columbia University, USA. He has taught philosophy, sociology and human rights at various universities in Bulgaria and abroad, including the St. Kliment Okhridski University of Sofia, the Plovdiv University, the University of Sarajevo, the University of Oregon and the Central European University. He has taught online courses for human rights professionals. Krassimir Kanev has on the boards of Bulgarian and international human rights organisations, including the International Helsinki Federation for Human Rights, the UN Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture, the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights, the Association for the Prevention of Torture, and the Public Interest Law Network. He has published several books and over 60 of articles in the fields of philosophy, sociology, law and human rights. He has successfully represented over 20 applicants before the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. He has participated in human rights monitoring missions in multiple countries in Europe, Africa, Asia and North America. He has trained representatives of non-governmental organizations and national human rights institutions in Eastern Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
